Kentwood Resident Killed in Fatal Crash on LA 440


On September 23, 2008 at 4:30 PM, Louisiana State Police, Troop L investigated a two vehicle fatal crash in Washington Parish at the intersection of LA 440 and Crystal Springs Road at milepost 23.5. A 1991 Ford Ranger, driven by Laterria James (B/F/Age 47) of Kentwood, LA, was traveling eastbound on LA 440 approaching Crystal Springs Road. A 1994 Peterbilt (18 wheeler), driven by Ricardo U. Burris (B/M/Age 30) of Mt. Hermon, LA was eastbound on LA 440 slowing to make a left turn onto Crystal Springs Road. When the driver of the Peterbilt slowed to make the left turn, the Ford Ranger struck the tractor-trailer in the rear.

The driver of the 1994 Peterbilt tractor-trailer, Ricardo Burris of Mt. Hermon, LA, was not injured in the crash. Ricardo Burris submitted to a chemical breath test, which indicated .000g% BAC. The driver was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.

The driver of the 1991 Ford Ranger, Laterria James of Kentwood, LA, was transported to Riverside Medical Center to receive medical treatment for severe injuries. Once at Riverside Medical Center, Laterria James was pronounced dead by Dr. Gary Golesh, due to injuries sustained in the crash. Alcohol/Drugs usage is not suspected; blood was obtained and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. The driver of the Ford Ranger was not wearing her seat belt at the time of the crash.
