On September 11, 2008 at 2:25 PM, Louisiana State Police, Troop L investigated a two vehicle fatal crash on LA 16 at milepost 45.3. A 2006 Mack tractor-trailer (gravel truck), driven by Joseph Carter (B/M/Age 53) of Carencro, LA, was traveling south on a private drive at the Lafarge gravel pit at LA 16. The driver of the Mack tractor-trailer drove onto the westbound and eastbound lanes of LA 16 to make a left turn, blocking the westbound lane and paved shoulder. A 1989 Chevrolet pickup, driven by Howard Jones Jr. (B/M/Age 50) of Denham Springs, LA was traveling west on LA 16. The driver of the Chevrolet pickup forcefully applied brakes to avoid impacting the tractor-trailer, but could not stop in time. After impact, the Chevrolet pickup caught fire and sustained total damage.

The driver of the 1989 Chevrolet pickup, Howard Jones Jr. of Denham Springs, LA, was pronounced dead at the scene by St. Helena Parish Coroner Dr. Varnado, due to injuries sustained in the crash. Alcohol/Drugs usage is not suspected; blood was obtained and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. The driver of the vehicle was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.

The driver of the 2006 Mack tractor-trailer, Joseph Carter of Carencro, LA, was not injured in the crash. Joseph Carter submitted to a chemical breath test, which indicated .000g% BAC. Joseph Carter was booked into the St. Helena Parish Jail on the following charges, Failure to Yield from Private Property (R.S.32:124) and Negligent Homicide (R.S.14:32).
