Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP L- NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release Date: November 1, 2008 Kentwood Resident Killed in Crash on US 51 in Tangipahoa Parish On Friday, October 31, 2008 at 11:40 PM, Louisiana State Police Troop L investigated a one-vehicle crash that resulted in the death of a Kentwood resident. The crash occurred on US 51 at milepost 57.8 in Tangipahoa Parish. A 2001 Pontiac Grand Am, driven by Calvin Brumfield (B/M/Age 39) of Tangipahoa, LA, was traveling south on US 51. Calvin Brumfield lost control of his vehicle and crossed the centerline upon the roadway. The Pontiac Grand Am ran off the northbound side of the roadway and traveled 100 feet in a southeast direction as the vehicle rotated counterclockwise. The vehicle then impacted a tree on the passenger side, prior to coming to final rest in the northbound ditch. The driver of the Pontiac Grand Am, Calvin Brumfield was transported to Hood Hospital by Acadian Ambulance to receive medical treatment for minor injuries. Once released from the hospital, Calvin Brumfield was charged and booked into the Amite Jail on the following charges, Careless Operation (R.S.32:58), No Driver’s License (R.S.32:52), Operating A Vehicle While Intoxicated (R.S.14:98) and Negligent Homicide (R.S.14:32). Alcohol/Drugs are suspected to be factors in the crash. Blood was obtained and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. The passenger, Kenneth D. James (B/M/Age 37) of Kentwood, LA, was transported to Hood Hospital by Acadian Ambulance to receive medical treatment for severe injuries. Kenneth James was then transported to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital for further medical treatment. While at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital Kenneth James was pronounced dead by Dr. Wright, due to injuries sustained in the crash.. The occupants did not use seat belts at the time of the crash.
