Motorcycle Crash Claims Two Lives on LA 22 in Tangipahoa Parish

Today, November 8, 2008 at 1:40 PM, Louisiana State Police Troop L investigated a two-vehicle crash that resulted in the death of two Gretna residents. The crash occurred on LA 22 at the intersection of LA 1249 (Pumpkin Center Road) at milepost 43.1 in Tangipahoa Parish.

A 2002 Harley Davidson motorcycle, driven by Brian C. Braud (W/M/Age 51) of Gretna, LA, was traveling eastbound on LA 22 at the intersection of LA 1249. A 2008 Ford Expedition, driven by Paul S. Dawson (W/M/Age 37) of Geismar, LA, was headed westbound on LA 22 at the intersection of LA 1249. For unknown reasons, the driver of the Harley Davidson lost control of his motorcycle after applying the brakes. The driver laid the motorcycle onto the roadway, causing both the driver and passenger to be separated from the motorcycle. The motorcycle and its riders slid into the westbound lane directly into the path of the Ford Expedition. The driver of the Expedition was unable to avoid the crash and struck both riders as they entered onto the westbound lane of LA 22. After impact, the Ford Expedition traveled off the right side of the roadway and struck a concrete curb in a private parking lot.

The driver of the Ford Expedition, Paul S. Dawson, was not injured in the crash. The driver submitted to a chemical breath test and the results indicated a BAC of .000g%. The driver was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.

The driver of the Harley Davidson Motorcycle, Brian C. Braud, was transported to North Oaks Medical Center by Acadian Ambulance to receive medical treatment for severe injuries. While at North Oaks Medical Center, Brian Braud was pronounced dead by Dr. Robert, due to injuries sustained in the crash. Alcohol usage by the driver is not suspected; however, blood was obtained and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. The passenger, Evelyn S. Powell (W/F/Age 55) of Gretna, LA, was pronounced dead at the scene by Mark Apperson of the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office, due to injuries sustained in the crash.
