Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP L- NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release Date: February 7, 2009 Passenger Killed and Juvenile Injured in Crash on LA 1049 in Tangipahoa Parish A vehicle crash on LA 1049 killed one person and injured a juvenile just before 1:00 p.m. this evening. Today at 12:40 PM, Louisiana State Police Troop L investigated a one-vehicle crash that resulted in the death of a Hammond resident. A 2006 Nissan Altima, driven by Kenneth Hampton (B/M/Age 18) of Hammond, LA, was traveling southbound on LA 1049. The driver failed to negotiate a curve to the left on the roadway and then the vehicle traveled off the right side of the roadway. Hampton overcorrected to the left, causing the Altima to travel off the left side of the roadway as it rotated counterclockwise. After traveling off the roadway for a second time, the Nissan impacted several bushes and a tree with its passenger side. After impacting the tree, the vehicle came to rest off the east side of LA 1049. The driver of the Nissan Altima, Kenneth Hampton was transported to North Oaks Medical Center by Acadian Ambulance to receive medical treatment for moderate injuries. Alcohol/Drug usage is suspected in the crash; blood was obtained and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Once released from North Oaks Medical Center, Kenneth Hampton will be charged and booked into the Amite Parish Jail on the following charges, Careless Operation (R.S.32:58), No Driver’s License (R.S. 32:52), Operating A Vehicle While Intoxicated With Child Endangerment (R.S.14:98J) and Vehicular Homicide (R.S.14:32.1). Passenger one, Marquetta Remble (B/F/Age 37) of Hammond, LA, was pronounced dead at the scene by Assistant Coroner Tom Terrell of the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office, due to injuries sustained in the crash. Passenger two, a juvenile (Age 8), was transported to North Oaks Medical Center by Acadian Ambulance to receive medical treatment for minor injuries. The occupants in the vehicle did not wear seat belts.
