Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP L- NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release Date: February 24, 2009 Pedestrian Killed in Crash on LA 1040 in Tangipahoa Parish A vehicle crash on LA 1040 at Happywoods killed a pedestrian just after 10:30 p.m. yesterday evening. Yesterday, at 10:35 PM, Louisiana State Police Troop L investigated a one-vehicle crash that resulted in the death of a Hammond resident. The pedestrian, Chad E. Martin (W/M/Age 28) of Hammond, LA, was previously riding in a vehicle driven by Melanie Martin (wife). The investigation revealed that, while riding in the vehicle an argument issued and the driver, Melanie Martin traveled off the roadway and upon a parking lot. Martin exited the vehicle and began walking west in the middle of the westbound lane of travel of LA 1040. A 2005 Ford F-150, driven by Nicolas C. Courtney (W/M/Age 23) of Hammond, LA, was traveling westbound on LA 1040. Courtney did not observe Martin walking in the roadway and struck Martin with the front of the Ford F-150. The pedestrian, Chad E. Martin, of Hammond, LA, was pronounced dead at the scene by Bruce Hosteter of the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office, due to injuries sustained in the crash. Alcohol/drug use is suspected; blood was obtained and will be submitted for analysis. The driver of the Ford pickup, Nicolas C. Courtney, of Hammond, LA, was not injured in the crash.
