January 6, 2008

At 1:04 AM, on January 6, 2008, Louisiana State Police Troop L investigated a four vehicle crash that resulted in the death of a Hammond resident. The crash occurred on US 11 at milepost 11.2 in St. Tammany Parish.

A 1998 Ford Explorer, driven by Robert O’Brien Jr. (W/M/Age 50) of Hammond, LA, was traveling southbound on US 11. The driver failed to maintain control of the Ford Explorer and its right tires traveled off the west side of the roadway, then traveling back onto the roadway and crossing over the roadway’s center line. The driver then overcorrected to the right, and the Explorer began to rotate clockwise as it traveled off the west side of the roadway impacting three unoccupied vehicles parked properly on private property. After leaving the roadway, the Ford Explorer traveled approximately 25 feet before its left side impacted the left side of one of the parked vehicles. This impact forced the parked vehicle to move and impact the two remaining parked vehicles. After impacting the parked vehicle, the Ford Explorer traveled approximately 52 feet in a southerly direction as it vaulted end over end, ejecting the driver in the process.

The driver of the Ford Explorer, Robert O’Brien Jr. was pronounced dead at the scene by St. Tammany Parish Assistant Coroner Angel Galloway, due to injuries sustained in the crash. The driver was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash. Alcohol involvement is unknown; the St. Tammany Parish Coroner’s Office obtained blood samples for analysis.
