At 5:51 AM, on January 20, 2008, Louisiana State Police Troop L investigated a one vehicle crash that resulted in the death of a Slidell resident. The crash occurred on LA 1090 at milepost 2.8 in St. Tammany Parish.

A 1997 Ford four door, driven by Matthew M. Menefee (W/M/Age 23) of Slidell, LA, was traveling southbound on LA 1090 (Military Road) in the left lane. When the vehicle reached the intersection of US 190 it veered to the left proceeding approximately 188 feet and traveled off the roadway 75 feet past the intersection. The Ford traveled into and across the parking lot of a local convenience store headed for the gas pumps. The driver overcorrected to the right and the vehicle began to rotate clockwise and impacted two retaining posts and a support pole for the convenience store awning. After the first impact, the vehicle rotated counterclockwise and impacted the gas pumps.

The driver of the Ford, Matthew M. Menefee of Slidell, LA, was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Tammany Parish Assistant Coroner Nick Culotta, due to injuries sustained in the crash. Alcohol is suspected in the crash and blood was obtained and will be sent for analysis. Passenger one, Wanda Loftus (W/F/Age 21) of Slidell, LA, was transported to Northshore Hospital to receive medical treatment for minor injuries. Passenger two, Michael Turner (W/M/Age 21) of Slidell, LA, was also transported to Northshore Hospital to receive medial treatment for minor injuries. All three occupants in the vehicle were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
