Pursuit in Tangipahoa Parish

On Thursday, March 20, 2008 at 7:00 PM, Louisiana State Police, Troop L assisted the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office with the pursuit that initiated on LA 442 north of Tickfaw. The Tangipahoa Sheriff’s Office informed Troop L that the Chevrolet had refused to stop and ran through a spike strip at the intersection of LA 40 and LA 442. They also relayed that it was reported that the driver was armed with a hand gun and was waving it at motorist prior to the pursuit. Troopers from Troop L who responded to assist the Sheriff’s Office, set up spike strips on LA 445 approximately 3 miles south of LA 40. As the pick-up approached the spikes, the driver abruptly swerved around them heading straight for the trooper on the side of the roadway. The trooper who was in fear for his life, fired several times at the pick-up, striking the vehicle. The trooper was able to move to the side narrowly escaping being struck. The Chevrolet continued approximately 2 miles south on LA 445 and turned left onto Chappepeella Road at which time its front tire fell off and it ran off of the roadway into bushes. The driver then attempted to flee on foot at which time she was apprehended

The driver, Brittany Candiotto (W/F, 24 yrs), of Independence, LA was arrested and charged with Attempted 1st Degree Murder of a police officer, Driving While Intoxicated, Reckless Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Resisting Arrest by Flight, Resisting Arrest and not wearing her seatbelt. She is also facing charges from the Tangipahoa Sheriff’s Office, for the initial incident.

No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident. Ms. Candiotto received minor injuries during her apprehension. She was transported to North Oaks Hospital, released and booked accordingly at the Amite Lock-up.
