State Police, Troop L – News Release
For Immediate Release

February 22, 2008

Today at 1:50 PM, Troop L Criminal Patrol Units were patrolling on Interstate 12 in St. Tammany Parish. During their patrols they stopped a 2008 Chrysler van eastbound on Interstate 12, for Improper Lane Usage at milepost 63.0.

After speaking with the driver and the passengers, several of the statements made were inconsistent and other indicators lead the troopers to believe that there was some possibility of criminal activity. After receiving both verbal and written consent to search the vehicle, two large safes and several laptop computers were located inside the vehicle. Also during the search of the vehicle several tools were located that are known to be used to commit burglaries. For safety reasons the vehicle was transported to Troop L and the investigation continued. Troop L requested that a K-9 dog be located. Covington Police Department responded with their K-9 and the K-9 alerted on both of the safes inside the vehicle for possible drugs. Troop L then contacted South District Narcotics; they arrived at Troop L headquarters and assisted in the investigation.

The investigating trooper prepared a search warrant for the two safes inside the vehicle. The search warrant was obtained and Mandeville Fire District 4 was called. Fire District 4 gained entry to both safes. Once in the safes all items were logged. Items located inside the safes were as follows; jewelry, personal items, miscellaneous paperwork and 18,486 dollars. There were also several business receipts, with several phone numbers. After making several calls we were advised to contact Zachary Police Department. Upon speaking with Zachary Police Department we were advised that the two safes in our possession were stolen in a residential burglary.

All of the suspects arrested were booked into the St. Tammany Parish Jail.

For any information about the residential burglary, please contact the Zachary Police Department at (225) 654-0073.
