| NEWS RELEASE Troop L Commercial Motor Vehicle Inspection Yields 1,300 Pounds of Marijuana March 10, 2008 On March 9, 2008, Louisiana State Police stopped a 2000 Freightliner tractor trailer for a Commercial Motor Vehicle Inspection. The stop was made on Interstate 12 at milepost 45 in Tangipahoa Parish. The driver of the truck was identified as forty-two year old Carlos D. Martinez of Weslaco, TX. During the inspection, the investigating trooper realized the driver had little knowledge about driving a commercial vehicle, at which point the trooper became suspicious of possible illegal activity. The trooper obtained written consent from the driver to search the contents of the vehicle and cargo, which consisted of fresh produce (cucumbers). While in the trailer the trooper observed a false wall behind which several blocks of marijuana were located. A total of 1300 lbs of marijuana was removed from the trailer. Louisiana State Police South District Narcotics agents were notified and assisted in the investigation. Once the investigation was complete Carlos D. Martinez, the tractor trailer and the 1,300 pounds of marijuana were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the United States Attorney's Office in New Orleans for further investigation.
