Troop L - News Release

June 21, 2008 / 8:30 PM (Update#2)

**UPDATE**

Interstate 10 westbound lanes have been opened to vehicular traffic at 8:26 PM. Interstate 10 eastbound lanes remain closed between Irish Bayou (New Orleans East) and LA 433 (Old Spanish Trail Exit) until further notice. OMI (Oil Mop Inc.) Hazmat Emergency Response Team is in the process of neutralizing and washing down the hydrochloric acid that was leaked onto the Interstate system. The tractor and trailer have both been removed from the scene and clean up is proceeding as planned. OMI is projecting that the eastbound lanes will possibly be re-opened at 2:00 AM, unless they encounter some unforeseen problems. The next update will be at 11:00 PM tonight.

18 Wheeler Crash Involves Hazardous Material

Today, June 21, 2008 at 4:30 AM this morning, Louisiana State Police responded to a one vehicle crash involving a hazardous material (Hydrochloric Acid). The crash occurred on Interstate 10 eastbound, just east of the Twin Span Bridge in Slidell, LA. The integrity of the tanker was compromised and leaking hydrochloric acid.

For the public’s safety, Louisiana State Police with the help of our local law enforcement agencies have closed Interstate 10 between Irish Bayou (New Orleans East) and LA 433 (Old Spanish Trail Exit) in both directions until further notice. Air traffic is not restricted at this time, but subject to change due to possible bad weather conditions.

Currently, Interstate 10 is open west of LA. 433 to all traffic. However, due to potential changes in wind speed/direction or other mitigating circumstances, Interstate 10 could be closed partially or entirely. There are no evacuations being planned at this time. DEQ is constantly testing the air quality to make sure the public is not in any danger. If there are any changes to the situation Louisiana State Police, St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office, Slidell Police Department and St. Tammany Fire District #1 are prepared to take immediate action.

We are asking the motoring public to choose an alternate route. Possible routes to get to and from New Orleans would be US90, the Causeway Bridge and Interstate 55. We are also asking our local motorists to use secondary roadways in the area.

Louisiana State Police Hazardous Materials Units are on scene and currently coordinating with LA DEQ and all local agencies to contain this situation.

Any significant updates will be forwarded as necessary.
