Today, June 8, 2008 at 9:16 AM, Louisiana State Police, Troop L investigated a two vehicle fatal crash on LA 16, one half mile east of LA 450 at milepost 79.5. A 2003 Dodge pickup, driven by Shawn R. Newman (W/F/Age 37) of Jefferson, LA, was traveling east on LA 16. A 1992 Chevrolet two door, driven by Lovie Miller (B/F/Age 26) of Amite, LA, was traveling on LA 16 headed west. As the Chevrolet topped over a hillcrest, the driver observed the Dodge pickup veering back and forth onto both lanes. As the two vehicles approached one another, the Dodge pickup crossed over the centerline and traveled into the westbound lane. The Chevrolet steered to the left and entered onto the eastbound lane in an attempt to avoid being struck by the Dodge pickup. Both vehicles made contact with each other (opposite direction sideswipe) on their passenger’s side. After impact, the Dodge came to final rest on the eastbound shoulder and the Chevrolet came to final rest in a ditch on the south side of the roadway.

The driver of the 1992 Chevrolet, Lovie Miller of Amite, LA, was transported to Riverside Medical Center by Advanced EMS to receive medical treatment for moderate injuries. Alcohol is not suspected; however, blood was obtained and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. The passenger, Sheila Burks (B/F/Age 24) of Amite, LA, was pronounced dead at the scene by Assistant Coroner M. Varnado of the Washington Parish Coroner’s Office, due to injuries sustained in the crash. The driver was wearing her seat belt at the time of the crash, but the passenger was not.

The driver of the Dodge pickup, Shawn R. Newman of Jefferson, LA, was transported to Riverside Medical Center to receive medical treatment for minor injuries. Upon the release of Shawn Newman from the hospital she will be booked into the Washington Parish Jail on the following charges; Driving Left of Center (R.S.32:71), Driving While Intoxicated (R.S.14:98), Possession of Schedule II Drugs (R.S.40:967.c), Vehicular Homicide (R.S.14:32.1) and First Degree Vehicular Negligent Injuring (R.S.14:39.2). The driver was not wearing her seat belt at the time of the crash.
