Abita Springs Resident Killed in Tangipahoa Parish Fatal Crash

On June 20, 2008 at 8:12 PM, Louisiana State Police, Troop L investigated a two vehicle serious injury crash on LA 445 at milepost 6.5 in Tangipahoa Parish. A 1995 GMC pickup, driven by Marion Piper (W/M/Age 64) of Abita Springs, LA, was traveling south on LA 445. A 2002 Chevrolet pickup, driven by a juvenile (W/M/Age 16) of Quitman, TX, was headed north on LA 445. The GMC pickup entered the left turn lane to turn onto the westbound on ramp to Interstate 12. As the driver of the GMC pickup proceeded to make its left turn, it turned directly into the path of the Chevrolet pickup. The Chevrolet pickup impacted the GMC pickup on its right side. After the initial impact, the driver of the GMC pickup was ejected from his vehicle.

The driver of the 2002 Chevrolet pickup was transported to North Oaks Medical Center by Acadian Ambulance to receive medical treatment for minor injuries. The driver submitted to a breath test and the results indicated .000g% BAC. The driver was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.

The driver of the GMC pickup, Marion Piper of Abita Springs, LA, was transported to North Oaks Medical Center to receive medical treatment for severe injuries. He was then transported to West Jefferson Hospital for further medical treatment. Alcohol is suspected to be a factor in this crash; blood was obtained and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. The driver was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash. Today, June 22, 2008 Louisiana State Police Troop L was notified that Marion Piper was pronounced dead by Dr. Charles Thomas of West Jefferson Hospital, due to injuries sustained in the crash.
