Two Springfield Residents Killed in St. Helena Parish Fatal Crash

Today, June 8, 2008 at 5:45 AM, Louisiana State Police, Troop L investigated a two vehicle fatal crash on LA 16 at milepost 58.4. A 1994 Chrysler four door, driven by James F. Gayles (B/M/Age 22) of Slidell, LA, was traveling east in the westbound lane of travel. A 1996 Infinity I30, driven by Willie Robinson (B/M/Age 52) of Springfield, LA, was traveling on LA 16 headed west. The Infinity had traveled onto LA 16 and proceeded west for approximately 150 feet and was struck head-on by the Chrysler. After impact the Infinity rotated clockwise, coming to final rest facing east in the eastbound lane. The Chrysler traveled approximately 38 feet, before coming to final rest in the eastbound lane of travel. The fog was observed to be heavy at the location of the crash.

The driver of the 1996 Infinity I30, Willie Robinson of Springfield, LA, was transported to Hood Hospital by Acadian Ambulance to receive medical treatment for severe injuries. Once at Hood Hospital, Willie Robinson was pronounced dead by Dr. Javaid Wani, due to injuries sustained in the crash. Alcohol is not suspected; however, blood was obtained and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Passenger one, Kayla Robinson (B/F/Age 21) of Springfield, LA, was transported to Greensburg Medical Center where she was pronounced dead by Dr. Clelland, due to injuries sustained in the crash. Passenger two, Corin Riley (B/F/Age 45) of Springfield, LA, was transported to North Oaks Medical Center by Acadian Ambulance to receive medical treatment for severe injuries. Seat belts were not worn by occupants in the vehicle.

The driver of the 1994 Chrysler four door, James F. Gayles of Slidell, LA, was transported to Lallie Kemp Hospital to receive medical treatment for moderate injuries. Upon the release of James F. Gayles from the hospital he will be booked into the St. Helena Parish Jail on the following charges; Driving Left of Center (R.S.32:71), No Drivers License (R.S.32:52), Driving While Intoxicated (R.S.14:98), two counts of Vehicular Homicide (R.S.14:32.1) and two counts of First Degree Vehicular Negligent Injuring (R.S.14:39.2). Alcohol is suspected to be a factor in this crash; blood was obtained and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. The passenger, Christopher Johnson (B/M/Age 20) of Slidell, LA, was transported to North Oaks Medical Center by Acadian Ambulance to receive medical treatment for minor injuries. Seat belts were worn by both the driver and the passenger in the vehicle.
