At 2:45 PM, on May 16, 2008, Louisiana State Police Troop L investigated a four-vehicle crash that resulted in the death of a Slidell resident. The crash occurred on Interstate 12 at milepost 44.7 in Tangipahoa Parish.

A 2002 Lexus, driven by Robert Owens (W/M/Age 56) of Slidell, LA, was traveling west on Interstate 12 in the left lane. A 2007 Pontiac, driven by Mary Dunne (W/F/Age 39) of Slidell, LA, was also traveling westbound, several vehicles behind the Lexus in the left lane. The Lexus traveled into the right lane of travel, due to an unknown vehicle tailgating his vehicle. Robert Owens then attempted to travel back into the left lane and did not observe the Pontiac traveling along side of his vehicle. The Pontiac veered to the left to avoid colliding with the Lexus. The Pontiac then entered the median and began rotating counterclockwise. The Pontiac entered the left lane of Interstate12 eastbound, where a 2003 Mitsubishi impacted it in the passenger’s side. Michael Martin (B/M/Age 51) of Greensburg, LA, drove the 2003 Mitsubishi. The Mitsubishi came to final rest across the left lane of Interstate 12 eastbound, and the Pontiac traveled onto the right shoulder of Interstate 12 eastbound where a 2004 Ford struck it in the rear. The Pontiac then traveled approximately 25 feet after this impact and came to rest facing southeast on the right shoulder. After impact, the Ford traveled about 100 feet and came to final rest near the eastbound fenceline. Gary Lee (W/M/Age 50) of Ponchatoula, LA, drove the 2004 Ford.

The driver of the Ford, Gary Lee of Ponchatoula, LA, was transported to North Oaks Medical Center by Acadian Ambulance to receive medical treatment for minor injuries. Alcohol is not suspected to be a factor in the crash. The driver was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.

The driver of the Mitsubishi, Michael Martin of Greensburg, LA, was transported to North Oaks Medical Center by Acadian Ambulance to receive medical treatment for minor injuries. Alcohol is not suspected to be a factor in the crash. The driver was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.

The driver of the Pontiac, Mary Dunne of Slidell, LA, was transported to North Oaks Medical Center by Acadian Ambulance to receive medical treatment for severe injuries. Once at North Oaks, Mary Dunne was pronounced dead by Dr. Reinecke due to injuries sustained in the crash. Alcohol is not suspected to be a factor in the crash. The driver was wearing her seat belt at the time of the crash

The driver of the Lexus, Robert Owens of Slidell, LA, was not injured in the crash. Robert Owens was charged and booked into the Tangipahoa Parish Jail on the following charges, Improper Lane Use (R.S.32:79) and three counts of Negligent Injuring (R.S.14:39). The driver submitted to a chemical breath test and the results indicated .000g% BAC. Passenger one, Bonnie Schroeder (W/F/Age 29) of Austin, TX, was not injured in the crash. Passenger two, Neville Owens (W/M/Age 78) of Houston, TX, was not injured in the crash. Passenger three, Jessica Owens (W/F/Age 26) of Birmingham, AL, was not injured in the crash. Passenger four, Jane Owens (W/F/Age 57) of Slidell, LA, was not injured in the crash. Passenger five, Helen Farrelly (W/F/Age 79) of Metairie, LA, was not injured in the crash. All occupants were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
