Armed Robbery Suspects Die in Fatal Crash

Troop L – On December 9, 2009, at approximately 7:20 PM, two male subjects entered the McDonald’s on US 190B at Claiborne Hill Street in Covington. Once inside, the subjects produced two blue steel semi-automatic handguns and robbed the restaurant. A witness that was present at the McDonald’s was able to obtain the license plate and description of the vehicle the suspects occupied. The license plate was broadcast to the surrounding police departments in an effort to locate the suspects. A St. Tammany Sheriff’s Office deputy later observed the suspects vehicle traveling on US 190 west, and attempted to stop the vehicle by activating his overhead lights and siren. The suspect vehicle began to flee from the deputy and a pursuit ensued.

While in pursuit, the suspect vehicle struck the rear of another vehicle that was traveling on US 190 west. After the impact, the driver of the suspect vehicle lost control, ran off the road to the left and struck several trees. Both suspects died on the scene as a result of the crash. Both suspects were not wearing seatbelts and toxicology results are pending. The other vehicle involved was able to pull safely to the shoulder of the road and there were no injuries reported from that vehicle. At this time, the investigation is on going and death notifications are pending identification of the deceased. The crash occurred in Tangipahoa Parish.

The Covington Police Department is handling the armed robbery.
