Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP L- NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release November 28th, 2009 Mississippi Resident arrested in Fatality Crash Amite, LA – Today at 4:40 am, Louisiana State Police Troop L investigated a two vehicle fatality crash on Interstate 55 north of Amite in Tangipahoa Parish. A 1991 Chevrolet Camaro, driven by Kevin D. Craig (W/M age 28) of Brandon, MS, was traveling north on Interstate 55 in the right lane of travel. A 2007 Dodge pickup truck, driven by Sherrelle T. Gardner (B/F age 23) of Magnolia, MS, was traveling in the right lane of I-55 northbound ahead of the Camaro. As the Camaro proceeded northbound at a high rate of speed, it rapidly approached the Dodge pickup truck in the right lane. Upon reaching the Dodge pickup, Craig veered to the left causing the Camaro to impact the left rear fender of the pickup with its right front fender. After impact, the Dodge pickup rotated in a clockwise manner as it slid across the right lane and shoulder traveling in a northeasterly direction. As the Dodge truck left the paved roadway, it overturned and ejected all four unrestrained occupants. The pickup came to rest facing a westerly direction in the wood line on the east side of Interstate 55. The Chevrolet Camaro, after impacting the Dodge, braked sharply and slid approximately 200 feet in a northwesterly direction before impacting a speed limit sign and coming to rest. The driver of the Chevrolet Camaro was uninjured in the crash and transported to the Tangipahoa Parish Jail in Amite. Alcohol and drug use is suspected with a chemical test pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. Craig was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash. He was charged with vehicular homicide, vehicular negligent injury, DWI 4th offense, and following too closely and booked at the Tangipahoa Parish Jail. The driver of the Dodge pickup truck was transported to Lallie Kemp Regional Medical Center with minor injuries. Gardner was not wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash and alcohol use is not suspected. A blood sample was taken from Gardner and submitted for analysis to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. Passenger one in the Dodge pickup, Timus Martin (B/M age 33) of Mt. Hermon, LA, was not wearing a seatbelt and transported to Lallie Kemp Regional Medical Center with minor injuries. Passenger two, Sanike Dyson (B/F age 22), was not wearing a seatbelt and transported to North Oaks Medical Center with moderate injuries. Passenger three in the Dodge pickup, Leon Perry (B/M age 60) of Kentwood, LA, was not wearing a seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office. All four occupants of the Dodge pickup truck were unrestrained and were ejected from the vehicle. Be Prepared, Be Buckled!!
