Motorcycle Crash takes Life of Ponchatoula Resident

Hammond – Yesterday at 6:54 pm, Louisiana State Police Troop L investigated a two vehicle fatal crash on LA 3158 (Airport Road) at the intersection with Old Covington Highway in Tangipahoa Parish.

A 2006 Honda Motorcycle, driven by John Windecker (W/M age 48) of Ponchatoula, LA, was traveling westbound on Old Covington Highway approaching the intersection with LA 3158. A 2003 Chevrolet Van, driven by Denise A. Jones (W/F age 42) of Ponchatoula, LA, was stopped in the northbound lane of LA 3158 at Old Covington Highway preparing to continue north through the intersection. As the Chevrolet Van proceeded northbound, the Honda Motorcycle failed to stop for the stop sign at the intersection and impacted the right passenger side of the van. The driver of the motorcycle came to rest on top of the motorcycle in the roadway.

The driver of the Honda Motorcycle, John Windecker, was transported to Northoaks Hospital by Acadian Ambulance in serious condition. Once at Northoaks, Mr. Windecker was pronounced dead by Dr. Gaines at 7:34 pm as a result of his injuries. Alcohol use is unknown at this time; however, blood was drawn and submitted for analysis to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab.

The driver of the Chevrolet Van, Denise A. Jones, received only minor injuries as a result of the crash and refused medical treatment at the scene. She was transported to Hammond Police Department for a chemical breath test and submitted a .000g% BAC sample. Jones was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash. Passenger one in the Chevrolet Van, James Gomez (W/M age 59) of Springfield, LA, was not injured in the crash and was wearing his seatbelt. Passenger two in the van, a juvenile, received no injuries and was properly restrained.
