TROOP L- NEWS RELEASE
For Immediate Release
November 23, 2009
Buckle Up America Thanksgiving Holiday Enforcement

Upon the approach of a busy Thanksgiving Day and holiday weekend, Troop L wants to remind motorists to drive carefully this holiday weekend and make it a safe holiday for everyone traveling on Louisiana’s roadways. With the rise of holiday gatherings, parties, and shopping comes an increase in traffic on our highways. Unfortunately, this increase in traffic also leads to increased crashes and fatalities in our area.

The Louisiana State Police will team up with law enforcement agencies across Louisiana and the United States in an effort to reduce traffic fatalities on our highways during this holiday season. This Thanksgiving holiday, troopers will be focusing on motorists not wearing seat belts, unrestrained children in vehicles, and any aggressive driving behaviors such as speeding, following too close, and driving while intoxicated.

So far in 2009, Troop L has investigated 51 fatality crashes, arrested 2,069 impaired drivers, and issued 12,617 seat belt tickets. Troop L’s commitment to aggressive DWI enforcement and hazardous moving violations has resulted in a decrease in fatality crashes since 2008. Troop L troopers along with troopers around the state are dedicated to patrolling the roadways in an effort to ensure a safe holiday season for everyone.

Throughout the Thanksgiving Holiday, Louisiana State Troopers and local law enforcement will participate in Buckle Up America, a nationwide program that involves all State Police and State Patrol agencies in an effort to reduce impaired driving, deaths, and injuries. The public can expect to see an increase in the number of troopers patrolling the highways and violations, which affect public safety, will be aggressively enforced. To report aggressive drivers or if you are in need of assistance, you may dial *LSP (*577) from your cellular phone to reach the State Police office closest to you.
