Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP L NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release April 11th, 2010 Hammond Couple killed in Hit and Run Crash Tangipahoa – Yesterday at 6:30 pm, Louisiana State Police Troop L investigated a three vehicle hit and run fatal crash on Interstate 55 north of LA 22 at milepost #27 in Tangipahoa Parish. An unknown black SUV was traveling north on Interstate 55 in the left lane of travel. A 2008 Ford Focus, driven by Carl J. Vorenkamp (W/M age 53) of Hammond, LA, was traveling north in the right lane of I-55. For an unknown reason, the black SUV veered to the left and drove off the roadway into the center median. The SUV then veered back to the right and impacted the left side of the Ford Focus causing the Focus to run off road to the right. As the Ford Focus continued off road, it crossed the East Service Road of Interstate 55 northbound, overturned, and struck a parked 1995 International dump truck. After impact, the Ford Focus came to rest overturned on its roof in a ditch. The black SUV fled the scene and continued north on Interstate 55. Vorenkamp was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office. Alcohol use is unknown at this time with a toxicology test pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. Passenger in the Ford Focus, Carrie M. Vorenkamp (W/F age 56) of Hammond, LA, was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle as it overturned. She was transported to North Oaks Hospital in critical condition where she was later pronounced dead due to injuries sustained in the crash. The hit and run vehicle is described by a witness as an older model black Cadillac SUV with damage to its right passenger side.
