Bicyclist Dies Attempting to Cross Interstate 10

At 7:49 PM, on Saturday, June 21, 2008, Louisiana State Police – Troop A began investigating a fatality involving a bicyclist. The fatality occurred on Interstate 10 east of LA Hwy 73 in Ascension Parish.

A bicyclist rode across Interstate 10 eastbound (from the right shoulder towards the median) into oncoming traffic. Drivers traveling east on Interstate 10 attempted to avoid the bicyclist by applying their brakes. The driver of a Mercedes Benz, Aubrey Miller (Female/Age 21) of Lafayette, LA, observed vehicles in front her swerving in the road. Ms. Miller then applied her brakes, traveled towards the median and struck the bicyclist. After impact, the bicyclist was ejected and the Mercedes Benz came to rest on the right shoulder of the Interstate.

The Ascension Parish Coroner’s Office pronounced the bicyclist dead at the scene. Ms. Miller was not injured and refused medical attention. She was wearing a seat belt and alcohol is not suspected to be a factor in this crash.

Troopers are working to identify the deceased in order to notify next of kin. An update will be provided once notification is made.
