Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP L- NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release Date: May 23, 2009 Two Killed in Crash on Interstate 59 in St. Tammany Parish Yesterday, shortly after 6:00 PM in the evening, Louisiana State Police Troop L investigated a three-vehicle fatal crash on Interstate 59 at milepost 7.6 in St. Tammany Parish. A 1993 Ford pickup, driven by Homer Phillips (W/M/age 74) of Carriere, MS, was traveling north on southbound left lane of Interstate 59. While traveling the wrong way on Interstate 59, the pickup struck a 2007 Ford pickup head-on. The 2007 Ford pickup was headed southbound in the left lane and was driven by Keith G. Stewart (W/M/age 27) of Peachtree, GA. After impact, the 2007 Ford pickup traveled into the median and came to a stop. The 1993 Ford pickup continued to travel forward and struck a 2005 Nissan Altima, driven by Tanya E. Dugas (W/M/age 33) of Birmingham, AL. After the second impact, the Nissan Altima traveled into the grass median and the 1993 Ford pickup traveled onto the southbound shoulder and overturned. The driver of the Nissan Altima, Tanya E. Dugas, of Birmingham, AL, was not injured in the crash. Alcohol use was not a factor for Dugas in this crash. Dugas was wearing her seat belt at the time of the crash. The driver of the 2007 Ford pickup, Keith G. Stewart, of Peachtree, GA, was transported to Slidell Memorial Hospital by Acadian Ambulance, to receive medical treatment for minor injuries. Alcohol use is not suspected for Stewart. The passenger, James M. Chapman (W/M/age 28) of Atlanta, GA, was pronounced dead by Vincent Giodano of the St. Tammany Parish Coroner’s Office, due to injuries sustained in the crash. The driver was wearing his seat belt during the crash, but the passenger was not. The driver of the 1993 Ford pickup, Homer Phillips, of Carriere, MS, was pronounced dead at the scene by Vincent Giodano of the St. Tammany Parish Coroner’s Office, due to injuries sustained in the crash. Alcohol use is not suspected for Phillips, however; blood was obtained and will be submitted for analysis. The driver was not wearing his seat belt during the crash.
