18 Wheeler Crash in Tangipahoa Parish Involves Hazardous Materials

Today, May 30, 2009 at 12:08 PM this afternoon, Louisiana State Police responded to a one vehicle crash involving a hazardous material (Carbon Dioxide). The crash occurred on Interstate 55 southbound, two miles south of Kentwood, LA. The integrity of the tanker has been compromised and is leaking carbon dioxide.

Safety measures have been implemented; Louisiana State Police with the help of our local law enforcement agencies have closed Interstate 55 southbound lanes between LA 38 (Kentwood) and LA 440 (Tangipahoa) until further notice.

Currently, Interstate 55 northbound lanes are open to all traffic. However, Interstate 55 northbound lanes may have to be closed intermittently, to allow for clean-up and the up righting of the tanker trailer. There are no evacuations being planned, due to the location of the crash and the chemical that was being carried onboard. Louisiana State Police and LA DEQ are constantly testing the air quality to make sure the public and first responders are not in any danger. If there are any changes to the situation Louisiana State Police, Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office, Kentwood Police Department, Hammond Fire Department (Hazmat) and Kentwood Fire Department are prepared to take immediate action.

We are asking the motoring public to choose an alternate route. Motorist heading south on Interstate 55 will need to take LA 38, to US 51, to LA 440 and can then proceed back upon the Interstate headed south. We are also asking our local motorists to use secondary roadways in the area.

Louisiana State Police Hazardous Materials Units are on scene and currently coordinating with LA DEQ and all local agencies to contain this situation. Any significant updates will be forwarded as necessary.
