Driver Killed While Driving the Wrong Way on Interstate 55 in Tangipahoa Parish

Yesterday, just after 10:30 PM in the evening, Louisiana State Police Troop L investigated a six-vehicle fatal crash on Interstate 55 northbound just south of LA 40 in Tangipahoa Parish.

A 1997 Chevrolet four door, driven by Shawna T. Cyprian (B/F/age 34) of Hammond, LA, was traveling south on the northbound lanes of the Interstate 55. A 2002 Chevrolet four door, driven by Giraldo Bersares-Veloz (W/M/age 44) of Miami, FL, was traveling north on Interstate 55 northbound. The two vehicles impacted on the roadway. The 1997 Chevrolet traveled off the roadway into the median and the 2002 Chevrolet rotated and came to rest across both lanes of travel. After impact, four additional vehicles struck the 2002 Chevrolet. The first was a 1998 Oldsmobile four door, driven by Rose M. Martin (B/F/age 49) of Hammond, LA. Second, was a 2004 Dodge pickup, driven by Percy Courtney, Jr. (W/M/age 61) of Roseland, LA. The third vehicle was a 2006 Chevrolet Malibu, driven by Jermaine Jackson (B/M/age 27) of Roseland, LA and the forth vehicle was a 2009 Nissan Maxima, driven by Regena N. Anzalone (W/F/age 58) of Independence, LA.

The driver of the 1997 Chevrolet four door, Shawna T. Cyprian, of Hammond, LA, was transported to North Oaks Medical Center by Acadian Ambulance, to receive medical treatment for severe injuries. Once at North Oaks Medical Center, Cyprian was pronounced dead by Tom Terrell of the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office, due to injuries sustained in the crash. Alcohol/Drugs use is suspected for Cyprian; blood was obtained and will be submitted for analysis.

The driver of the 2002 Chevrolet four door, Giraldo Bersares-Veloz of Miami, FL, was transported to North Oaks Medical Center by Acadian Ambulance to receive medical treatment for moderate injuries. The passenger, Noriel Alfonso-Velzo (W/M/age 30) of Hialeah, FL, was transported to North Oaks Medical Center by Acadian Ambulance to receive medical treatment for moderate injuries. Both occupants were wearing their seat belts.

The driver of the 1998 Oldsmobile four door, Rose M. Martin of Hammond, LA, was transported to North Oaks Medical Center by Acadian Ambulance to receive medical treatment for minor injuries. The passenger, Floyd Holden (B/M/age 32) of Tickfaw, LA, was transported to Lallie Kemp Hospital by Acadian Ambulance to receive medical treatment for minor injuries. Both occupants were wearing their seat belts.
The driver of the 2004 Dodge pickup, Percy Courtney Jr. of Roseland, LA, was transported to North Oaks Medical Center by Acadian Ambulance to receive medical treatment for minor injuries. The driver was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.

The driver of the 2006 Chevrolet Malibu, Jermaine Jackson of Roseland, LA, was not injured in the crash. The driver was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.

The driver of the 2009 Nissan Maxima, Regena N. Anzalone of Independence, LA, was not injured in the crash. The driver was wearing her seat belt at the time of the crash.
