One Killed and Four Injured in Crash on Interstate 55 in Tangipahoa Parish

Troop L - On September 6, 2009, at 6:20 PM, Louisiana State Police Troop L investigated a fatal crash on Interstate 55 at milepost 41.7 in Tangipahoa Parish.

A 2002 Chevrolet Impala, driven by Demetria S. Mearidy (B/F/Age 18) of Tangipahoa, LA, was traveling northbound on Interstate 55 in the right lane. For unknown reasons, the vehicle traveled off the roadway to the right. Once off the roadway, the Impala traveled approximately 55 feet and struck a tree on the driver’s side of the vehicle. After impact, the vehicle rotated onto its left side and came to final rest on its roof.

The driver of the Chevrolet Impala, Demetria S. Mearidy, of Tangipahoa, LA, was pronounced dead at the scene by Investigator Stephen Wells of the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office, due to injuries sustained in the crash. Passenger one, Lequita Brown (B/F/Age 21) of Tangipahoa, LA, was transported to North Oaks Medical Center by Acadian Ambulance, to receive medical treatment for moderate injuries sustained in the crash. Passenger two, Prencess Brown (B/F/Age 18) of Tangipahoa, LA, was transported to North Oaks Medical Center by Acadian Ambulance, to receive medical treatment for minor injuries sustained in the crash. Passenger’s three and four are both juveniles, and were both transported to North Oaks Medical Center by Acadian Ambulance, to receive medical treatment for minor/moderate injuries sustained in the crash. Alcohol/drugs use is not suspected in the crash; blood was obtained and will be submitted for analysis. Seat belts were worn by all occupants in the vehicle at the time of the crash.
