Failure to Yield for a Stop Sign Kills One and Injures Four in Tangipahoa Parish

Troop L - Yesterday, just before 10:00 PM, Louisiana State Police Troop L investigated a two-vehicle fatal crash on LA 1040 at the intersection of South Baptiste Road in Tangipahoa Parish.

A 2006 Chevrolet pickup, driven by William B. Calmes (W/M/age 23) of Holden, LA, was traveling southbound on South Baptiste Road. A 1999 Ford Taurus, driven by Stacy M. Liebert (W/F/age 26) of Slidell, LA, was traveling eastbound on LA 1040. Calmes failed to stop for the stop sign at the intersection of South Baptiste Road and LA 1040. The Chevrolet pickup traveled directly into the path of the Ford Taurus. The Ford struck the right side of the Chevrolet with its front end. After impact, both vehicles traveled off the roadway to the right. The pickup then rolled onto its left side, impacted a tree and came to rest on its right side. During the crash, Calmes was ejected due to not being restrained.

The driver of the Ford Taurus, Stacy M. Liebert, of Slidell, LA, was pronounced dead by Mark Apperson of the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office, due to injuries sustained in the crash. Alcohol use is not suspected for Liebert; blood was obtained and will be submitted for analysis. Passenger one, Lashiel R. Pierre (B/M/age 31) of Springfield, LA, was transported to North Oaks Hospital by Acadian Ambulance to receive medical treatment for severe injuries. Pierre was later transported to University Hospital in New Orleans for continued medical treatment of his injuries. Passenger two, Sidney Randall III (B/M/age 29) of Springfield, LA, was transported to North Oaks Hospital by Acadian Ambulance to receive medical treatment for moderate injuries. Passenger three, Jermaine D. Robertson (B/M/age 24) of Hammond, LA, was transported to North Oaks Hospital by Acadian Ambulance to receive medical treatment for moderate injuries. Occupants in the vehicle were not wear seat belts during the crash.

The driver of the Chevrolet pickup, William B. Calmes, of Holden, LA, was transported to North Oaks Hospital by Acadian Ambulance to receive medical treatment for severe injuries. Calmes was later transported to University Hospital in New Orleans for continued medical treatment of his injuries. Alcohol use is not suspected for Calmes; blood was obtained and will be submitted for analysis. Calmes was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash. Upon the release of Calmes from the hospital, he will be booked into the Tangipahoa Parish Jail on the following charges; Failure to Yield from a Stop Sign, Driving under Suspension, Negligent Homicide and three counts of Negligent Injury.
