TROOP L NEWS RELEASE Unrestrained Driver Killed in Crash on LA 437 Covington- On Thursday May 9th, 2019, at approximately 9:11 PM, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L responded to a two vehicle fatal crash on LA 437 near Playmakers Rd. in St. Tammany Parish. The crash has claimed the life of 66-year-old Richard Gomez of Marrero. The initial investigation led Troopers to determine that the crash occurred as Gomez was driving a 2000 Ford F-150 southbound on LA 437. As Gomez’s truck traveled through a curve, the right side tires exited the roadway and struck a tree, which had fallen near the edge of the roadway. Gomez’s vehicle then traveled back to the left, across the center line, and into the northbound travel lane. After crossing into the northbound lane, Gomez’s truck was struck by a 2016 Mercedes 350, driven by 24-year-old Katelyn Zeigler of Folsom. Gomez was not restrained at the time of the crash. He was ejected from his vehicle and sustained severe injuries. He was transported to St. Tammany Parish Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased shortly after his arrival. Gomez showed no indication of impairment. As part of the on-going investigation, blood samples were collected for analysis. Zeigler was properly restrained and sustained minor injury in the crash. Zeigler showed no signs of impairment. Zeigler submitted a voluntary breath sample, which confirmed no amount of alcohol present. Troopers would like to remind motorists of the importance of safe decisions behind the wheel. Please take a moment to speak with your loved ones about the importance of their safe decisions. Remind them to always wear a seatbelt, never drive impaired, and to avoid distractions. The conversation could be the difference in a serious crash. Contact Information: | |||
