Unrestrained Driver Killed in Crash on US 51

Independence- On Tuesday April 30, 2019, at approximately 3:00 AM, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L responded to a single vehicle fatal crash on US 51 north of LA 40. The crash has claimed the life of 27-year-old Michael “Dwight” Hoyt of Livingston Parish.

The initial on scene investigation led Troopers to determine that the crash occurred as Hoyt was driving a 2000 Toyota pick-up truck southbound on US 51. For reasons still under investigation, Hoyt’s vehicle traveled off the right side of the roadway and crashed into a culvert. The impact caused Hoyt’s truck to overturn several times before coming to final rest.

Hoyt was unrestrained at the time of the crash. He sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased on-scene by the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office. There were no indications of impairment and blood tests are pending.

Troopers would like to remind motorists of the importance of safe decisions behind the wheel. Please take a moment to speak with your loved ones about the importance of their safe decisions. Remind them to always wear a seatbelt, never drive impaired, and to avoid distractions. The conversation could be the difference in a serious crash.
