TROOP L NEWS RELEASE Driver Dies in Two-Vehicle Crash on Interstate 55 Independence – On Friday, March 20, 2020 shortly before 1:00 PM, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L responded to a two-vehicle, fatal crash on Interstate 55 North near LA 40 in Tangipahoa Parish. The crash has claimed the life of 53-year-old Michelle C. Hilton of Amite. The initial investigation led Troopers to determine that the crash occurred as Hilton was driving a Kia Soul northbound on Interstate 55 in the left lane. Hilton’s vehicle struck the rear-end of a trailer attached to a Chevrolet Silverado HD pickup truck also traveling north on Interstate 55 in the left lane. Despite wearing a seat belt, Hilton received fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased on the scene. The driver of the pickup truck was wearing a seat belt and uninjured. At this time, impairment is not suspected. As part of the crash investigation, a blood sample was collected for scientific analysis from Hilton. The driver of the pickup truck submitted a breath sample that showed no evidence of alcohol. The investigation remains ongoing and no additional information is available at this time. Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists to make good, safe decisions such as never driving while impaired, always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained, obeying the speed limit, and avoiding all distractions which can often mean the difference between life and death. While not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that the chances of surviving a crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Contact Information: | |||
