Motorcyclist Killed in Crash on LA 22

Ponchatoula – Shortly before 9:00 pm, on Wednesday October 31, 2018, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L responded to a fatal crash involving a motorcycle on LA 22 west of Interstate 55 in Tangipahoa Parish. The crash has claimed the life of 54-year-old Gerald A. East of Springfield.

The initial investigation led Troopers to determine that the crash occurred as East was riding a 2016 Harley Davidson motorcycle westbound on LA 22. A 2011 Kia Sorento, driven by 40-year-old Michael Wayne Culotta of Tickfaw, had come to a stop due to congestion ahead of East’s motorcycle. East failed to stop his motorcycle and crashed into the rear of the Sorento.

East was not wearing a DOT approved helmet at the time of the crash. He sustained severe injuries and was transported to North Oaks Health Systems by Acadian Ambulance. Shortly after arriving at the hospital, East succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash. As part of the on-going investigation, blood samples were collected and will be sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for scientific analysis. Culotta was properly restrained at the time of the crash. He was uninjured. Culotta provided Troopers with a voluntary breath sample, which showed no amount of alcohol present.
