Fluid Trail Leads to Arrest of Slidell Resident in Fatal Hit and Run Crash

Slidell- At 10:40 PM on Saturday November 25, 2017, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L responded to a fatal hit and run crash on US 190 near the intersection of Christa Drive. A cyclist, 59-year-old Calvin Lefort Jr. of Slidell, was killed in the crash. A fluid trail from the suspect vehicle would ultimately lead to the arrest of 48-year-old Larry Dean Kellett of Slidell.

The preliminary on-scene investigation led Troopers to determine that the crash occurred as Lefort was riding a bicycle westbound on US 190. Lefort was hit from behind by a 1991 Chevrolet Van driven by Kellett. The impact caused Lefort to become lodged in the windshield of Kellett’s van. Following the crash, Kellett stopped his vehicle on the shoulder, removed Lefort from the windshield and dumped his body near the ditch. Kellett then fled the scene. A passerby later observed Lefort’s body and called 911. Lefort was transported from the scene to Slidell Memorial Hospital in critical condition. Shortly after his arrival, Lefort succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash.

During the investigation, it was determined that Kellett’s van was dripping fluid after the crash. Investigating Troopers were able to follow the fluid trail to the residence of Kellett’s girlfriend, where Kellett and his van were both located. Kellett admitted his involvement in the crash. Kellett provided Troopers with a voluntary breath sample, which showed no amount of alcohol present. Kellett was arrested and booked into the St. Tammany Parish Jail for Negligent Homicide, Felony Hit-and-Run, and Driving Under Suspension. Troopers determined that Lefort was not wearing a helmet and his bicycle was not equipped with lights. As part of the on-going investigation, blood samples were collected from Lefort for analysis.
