| LOUISIANA STATE POLICE COURTESY LOYALTY SERVICE Colonel Michael D. Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP A- NEWS RELEASE Troop A Window Tint Enforcement In recent months Louisiana State Police – Troop A troopers have noticed many drivers opting for window tint to protect themselves and their vehicle from the harmful effects of the sun. However, many drivers have protected themselves to the point of violating state law. Armed with recently issued tint meters, each trooper assigned to Louisiana State Police – Troop A has increased enforcement of the Louisiana window tint law (LRS 32.361.1). The Louisiana tint law applies to the vehicle manufacturer, distributor, seller or owner of sun screening device(s). The legal limits of the sun screening device (window tint) on a passenger car are light transmissions of 40 percent for front side windows, 25 percent for rear side windows and 12 percent for the rear windshield. The legal limit of 40 percent still applies for the front side windows for all pickups and multi-passenger (SUV) vehicles. Louisiana law also prohibits the application of any type of object or material that alters the color or reduces light transmission on the front windshield. A driver found in violation of the state law can expect to pay fines (depending on offense) ranging from $150 - $350 dollars. A manufacturer, distributor, seller or installer of a sun screening device (window tint) that is convicted of violating the state law can be fined $1,000 for a first offense and $2000 for a second offense. For a third offense or subsequent conviction of the Louisiana window tint law, an individual or business can be prohibited from installing, selling or manufacturing window tint. There are medical and security exemptions available that must be approved by the Louisiana State Police. The forms for the exemptions can be located at www.lsp.org in the applications and forms section. For more information contact: S/T Johnnie L.
