TROOP L NEWS RELEASE September 21, 2017 Off Duty Slidell Police Lieutenant Killed in Fatal Crash on Brownswitch Rd. Slidell - At approximately 10:28 PM on Wednesday, September 20, 2017, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L were contacted by the Slidell Police Department to investigate a two vehicle fatal crash on Brownswitch Rd. west of LA 1091 (Robert Blvd). The crash claimed the life of 52 year old Ray Dupuy, a Lieutenant with the Slidell Police Department. Based on the preliminary on-scene investigation, Troopers were able to determine that the crash occurred as 29 year old Gina Marie Groglio of Pearl River was driving a 2014 Honda Civic eastbound on Brownswitch Rd. Dupuy, who was off duty at the time, was driving a 2012 Honda motorcycle westbound on Brownswitch Rd. Groglio attempted to turn left into a private drive. When Groglio turned, she traveled into the path of Dupuy’s motorcycle. The front of Dupuy’s motorcycle crashed into the passenger side rear corner of Groglio’s vehicle. Despite wearing an approved DOT helmet, Dupuy sustained severe injuries in the crash. He was initially transported to Ochsner Medical Center – Northshore before being transferred by Acadian Air to University Medical Center - New Orleans. Shortly after his arrival at UMC, Dupuy succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash. Impairment is not suspected to be a contributing factor in this crash. As part of the investigation, blood samples were obtained and will be sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Groglio was properly restrained and was uninjured in the crash. She provided Troopers with a voluntary breath sample which showed no amount of alcohol present. Groglio was cited for Improper Turning. The crash investigation is ongoing. Troopers will consult with the St. Tammany Parish District Attorney Office for any additional charges pending the completion of the investigation. Troopers would like to reinforce the importance of watching for motorcycles. Too often, Troopers are tasked investigating preventable fatal crashes involving motorcycles. Distractions, impairments and carelessness are recurring factors in these preventable crashes. Please do your part to keep motorcycle drivers safe. Some tips to ensure their safety include looking for oncoming traffic when making left turns, then look again for motorcycles. Increase your follow distance when behind cyclists and finally, make a conscience note to lookout and be aware when you see a motorcycle. Contact Information: | |||
