TROOP L NEWS RELEASE March 16, 2018 Pedestrian Killed in Crash on LA 16 in St. Helena Parish St. Helena- At approximately 6:23 AM on Friday, March 16, 2018, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L responded to a fatal pedestrian crash on LA 16 near the intersection of Leonard Chapel Rd. The crash has claimed the life of 38-year-old St. Helena resident Andre Dewayne Self. The initial on-scene investigation led Troopers to determine that the crash occurred as Self was walking in the eastbound lane of LA 16. He was wearing dark clothing and there were no street lights in the area. Self was struck by a 2013 Mercedes C25 driven by 50-year-old Ronald S. Shaffett of Kentwood. Self sustained fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced deceased on scene by the St. Helena Parish Coroner’s Office. As part of the ongoing investigation, blood samples were obtained from Self and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Shaffett provided Troopers with a voluntary breath sample, which showed no amount of alcohol present. Troopers urge pedestrians to maintain a heightened level of awareness while walking near the road. Simple precautions such as wearing reflective materials, avoiding distractions, and walking a safe distance from travel lanes could prevent most pedestrian related crashes. Contact Information: | |||
