Motorcyclist Killed in Four Vehicle Crash on Interstate 55

Amite- At approximately 2:25 PM on Saturday August 11, 2018, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L responded to a four vehicle fatal crash involving two motorcycles on Interstate 55 northbound south of LA 16. The crash has claimed the life of 57-year-old Slidell resident Earl H. Jones Jr.

The initial investigation led Troopers to determine that two motorcycles were traveling northbound on Interstate 55 in the left lane. Jones was riding a 2003 Honda Gold Wing motorcycle. 60-year-old Ronald Cagler of Picayune, MS was riding a 2007 Harley Davidson. The two motorcycles were traveling together with the Gold Wing slightly ahead of the Harley Davidson. A 2017 Chevrolet Malibu driven by 43-year-old Amber Davis of Mangham, LA was driving just ahead of the two motorcycles in the left lane. The motorcycles were traveling at a higher rate of speed and crashed into the rear of the Malibu. Following the impact, Jones’ motorcycle traveled off the left side of the roadway and he was ejected. Cagler’s Harley also ran off the roadway to the left and traveled into the grass median. Cagler’s motorcycle then traveled out of the median, back upon the roadway, and began to flip, ejecting the rider onto the roadway.

Following the collision with the two motorcycles, Davis’ Malibu traveled from the left lane into the right lane, where it crashed into a 2008 Toyota Tacoma, driven by 70-year-old Thomas Morgan, of French Settlement. The impact caused both vehicles to exit the right side of the roadway, where the two vehicles came to final rest.

Earl H. Jones Jr. was pronounced dead on-scene by the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office, due to injuries sustained in the crash. Blood was obtained and will be submitted to the LSP Crime Lab for analysis. Jones was wearing a DOT approved helmet at the time of the crash.

Cagler was taken to North Oaks Medical Center, to receive treatment for injuries sustained in the crash. Blood was obtained and will be submitted to the LSP Crime Lab for analysis. Cagler was cited for Careless Operation. He was wearing a DOT approved helmet at the time of the crash.

Davis and her 13-year-old juvenile passenger were taken to North Oaks Medical Center, to receive treatment for injuries sustained in the crash. Blood was obtained from Davis and will be submitted to the LSP Crime Lab for analysis. Neither the driver nor the passenger, were wearing their seat belt at the time of the crash.

Morgan was taken to North Oaks Medical Center, to receive treatment for injuries sustained in the crash. Blood was obtained and will be submitted to the LSP Crime Lab for analysis. Morgan was properly restrained at the time of the crash.

Troopers would like to remind all motorists of the importance of safe decisions behind the wheel. Please take a moment to speak with your loved ones about the importance of their safe decisions. Remind them to always wear a seatbelt, never drive impaired, and to avoid distractions. The conversation could be the difference in a serious crash.
