TROOP L NEWS RELEASE Bicyclist Killed in Crash on LA 36 Covington – Shortly before 11:00 pm, on Tuesday October 30, 2018, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L responded to a fatal crash involving a bicycle on LA 36 near 7th Street in St. Tammany Parish. The cyclist did not survive the crash. Troopers are withholding the name of the deceased pending notification to next of kin. The initial on-scene investigation led Troopers to determine that the cyclist was riding a mountain style bicycle westbound on LA 36 on or near the solid white fog line. Based on evidence gathered at the scene, Troopers determined that the bicycle was not equipped with safety lamps as required by Louisiana revised statute. The cyclist was wearing dark colored clothing and was not wearing a helmet. The crash occurred as 26-year-old Kristofer Donelle Brumfield of Covington was driving a 2014 Nissan Maxima westbound on LA 36 approaching the cyclist from the rear. The right front bumper of the Maxima impacted the bicycle. The impact caused the bicyclist to be ejected. The cyclist sustained severe injuries in the crash. He was transported to St. Tammany Parish Hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash. As part of the on-going investigation, a blood sample was collected from the cyclist and will be sent to the St. Tammany Parish Coroner’s Office for analysis. Brumfield provided Troopers with a voluntary breath sample, which showed no alcohol present.
