| TROOP L NEWS RELEASE May 3, 2018 Infant Killed, Driver Charged with Vehicular Homicide in Fatal Crash on I-12 Covington- At approximately 3:25 PM on Wednesday May 2, 2018, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L responded to a two vehicle fatal crash on Interstate 12 eastbound near US 190. The crash has claimed the life of one month old Bryce Martin from Hammond. The initial investigation led Troopers to determine that the crash occurred as 62-year-old Hammond resident Erroll Nugent was driving a 2001 Ford Taurus eastbound on Interstate 12. After missing his exit to US 190 south, Nugent pulled into the center median of Interstate 12. As Nugent attempted to re-enter Interstate 12, he pulled into the path of a 2006 Peterbilt tractor-trailer, which had been traveling eastbound in the left lane. The tractor-trailer was driven by Reymundo Nunez of Mission, TX. The front of the tractor-trailer crashed into the rear of the Taurus. Following the collision, both vehicles traveled into the center median. Nunez was properly restrained at the time of the crash. He was uninjured. Nunez provided Troopers with a voluntary breath sample, which showed no amount of alcohol present. Nugent sustained moderate injuries in the crash. He was transported to St. Tammany Parish Hospital. Troopers suspected Nugent was impaired. A search warrant was obtained to collect a blood sample from Nugent. The sample will be sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Nugent’s rear seat passenger, one month old Bryce Martin was not properly restrained at the time of the crash. He sustained severe injuries and was transported to Lakeview Hospital in critical condition. Martin was later flown to Children’s Hospital in New Orleans, where he ultimately succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash. Three other occupants in Nugent’s vehicle sustained moderate injuries. Once released from the hospital, Nugent will be booked into the St. Tammany Parish Jail for Vehicular Homicide, Vehicular Negligent Injuring (3 counts), Child Restraint (2 counts), Careless Operation, and Suspended Driver's License. The investigation is on-going and any additional charges will be referred to the St. Tammany Parish District Attorney’s Office. The tragic outcome in yesterday’s crash is compounded by the fact that it was completely preventable. Poor/criminal decisions led to the loss of a one month old child. Impairment, distractions and lack of restrain continue to be contributing factors in crashes daily. Please, speak to your loved ones about the importance of safe decisions behind the wheel. Remind them to never drive impaired, always wear a seatbelt and avoid distractions. The conversation could be the difference in the event of a crash. If you or someone you know needs assistance with child restraints, Louisiana State Police Troop L along with several other agencies on the Northshore offer free child seat inspections.
