TROOP L NEWS RELEASE
July 02, 2018

Pedestrian Killed on Interstate 10

Slidell- At approximately 8:30 PM on Sunday July 1st, 2018, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L responded to a fatal pedestrian crash on Interstate 10 near Old Spanish Trail. The crash has claimed the life of 45-year-old Sylvester Horton of Canton, MS.

The initial investigation led Troopers to determine that the crash occurred as 23-year-old Cecilia Gayle Genova of Metairie was driving a 2013 Honda Fit west on Interstate 10 in the center lane. The pedestrian, Sylvester Horton, traveled from the grass median in an attempt to cross to the right shoulder of the westbound lanes of Interstate 10. When Horton entered the center lane, he was struck by the Honda Fit. Horton was wearing dark colored clothing and it was raining at the time of the crash. Horton was pronounced deceased on scene by the St. Tammany Parish Coroner’s Office due to injuries sustained in the crash. As part of the ongoing investigation, blood samples were obtained. The results are pending scientific analysis. Genova provided Troopers with a voluntary breath sample, which showed no amount of alcohol present.

During the crash investigation, a 2003 Cadillac DeVille was located approximately 3.7 tenths of a mile west of the crash location. The vehicle was abandoned on the right shoulder of I-10 westbound, not running and no lights on. Inside the vehicle, several items were located that linked the vehicle to Sylvester Horton.

Troopers would like to remind motorists of the dangers of becoming a pedestrian on the interstate system. It is extremely difficult as a pedestrian to judge the speed of oncoming traffic. Should you find yourself in a disabled vehicle on the interstate system, call 911 or *LSP [*577] to be connected to the nearest Troop in your area.
