Driver Impairment Suspected in St. Helena Fatal Crash

Greensburg, LA- Earlier this evening shortly before 7:00pm, a Greensburg resident was involved in a single vehicle fatal crash on LA 43 approximately half a mile north of LA 10 in St. Helena Parish. The fatally injured driver, 67-year-old Lee Womack, was not wearing a seatbelt and is suspected to have been impaired at the time of the crash.

Troopers’ investigation revealed that the crash occurred as Womack was traveling south on LA 43 in a 2003 Ford van. As Womack continued southbound, he failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway causing the van to run off road to the right. Womack overcorrected to the left, reentered the southbound lane, and then counter steered back to the right causing the Ford van to rotate in a clockwise manner and leave the roadway for a second time. Upon leaving the paved roadway, the van struck a culvert and overturned several times ejecting Womack from the vehicle.

Womack sustained fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Helena Parish Coroner’s Office. Investigating Troopers suspect alcohol impairment to have been a factor in the crash. A blood sample was obtained and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for further analysis.

As seen far too often, the combination of driver impairment and lack of seatbelt use resulted in life changing consequences for not only the victim but also everyone affected by this fatal crash. Making the right decision can often mean the difference between life and death.
