Greenwell Springs Woman Arrested after Fatal Crash with Motorcycle in Livingston Parish

Denham Springs, LA Shortly after 6:00 am on January 18, 2017, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a two vehicle fatality crash that occurred on LA 64 west of LA 1028 in Livingston Parish. The crash took the life of 43 year old Jason Zachary of Denham Springs, LA and resulted in the arrest of 30 year old Raychel Martinez of Greenwell Springs, LA.

The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Martinez was traveling eastbound on LA 1028 in a 2013 Kia Optima. At the same time, Zachary was traveling westbound on LA 64 on a 2007 Harley Davidson motorcycle. For reasons still under investigation, Martinez crossed the center line and struck Zachary head-on.

Zachary sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Livingston Parish Coroner’s Office. Martinez sustained minor injuries and was transported to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital for treatment. Troopers do suspect impairment on the part of Martinez. A toxicology sample will be taken from both drivers for analysis.

Troopers have placed Martinez under arrest for Vehicular Homicide and Driving Left of Center. Upon her release from the hospital, she will be booked into the Livingston Parish Jail.

Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists that impaired driving continues to be a major problem throughout Louisiana. Whether impaired through alcohol, drugs, or a combination of the two, the consequences of driving while impaired remain the same. Making good choices while in motor vehicles such as never driving while impaired, always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained, and avoiding all distractions can often mean the difference between life and death.
