| LOUISIANA STATE POLICE COURTESY LOYALTY SERVICE Colonel Michael D. Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP A- NEWS RELEASE Overturned Tanker Shuts Down Interstate 10 RAMAH- On Thursday, January 29, 2009 at 4:57 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop A and the Emergency Service Unit responded to an overturned tanker on Interstate 10 east of the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge. An 18-wheel tanker truck, owned by Martin Transport, was eastbound in the left lane on Interstate 10 when the truck began drifting towards the center median. The driver attempted to steer the truck back onto the roadway but over corrected and swerved towards the right shoulder of the road. The driver tried to return the truck to the left lane but lost control. The truck entered the center median where it began to roll over. The tanker came to rest across both westbound lanes of Interstate 10. The driver, Tiffany Rideaux (B/F, 35 years old of LaPlace), received minor injuries during the crash and was transported to the Baton Rouge General Medical Center for evaluation. The tanker truck was not carrying any cargo at the time of the incident, but small amounts of molten sulphur residue were found inside the tanker. State Police Emergency Services Unit (Haz-Mat) responded along with DEQ, and local fire departments to make sure no remaining materials were leaked from the truck. State Police closed Interstate 10 both eastbound and westbound as a precautionary measure until the truck could be removed from the scene. All lanes were re-opened at 8:50 a.m. Alcohol use by the driver is not suspected. Rideaux told police she had been very drowsy prior to the crash. State Police would like to stress that sleep deprivation can be just as dangerous for drivers as alcohol impairment. Make sure you have plenty of rest before you get behind the wheel.
