TROOP L NEWS RELEASE Unrestrained Driver Killed in Single Vehicle Crash Bogalusa – On Wednesday, July 1, 2020 shortly before 8:30pm, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L responded to a fatal crash on LA 60 west of LA 1072 in Washington Parish. The crash claimed the life of 55-year-old John W. Helton of Bogalusa. The initial investigation led Troopers to determine that Helton was eastbound on LA 60 in a Chevrolet C1500 pickup when a deer entered the roadway in front of him. Helton’s vehicle impacted the deer and then exited the roadway into a ditch where it began to overturn. Helton was unrestrained and sustained fatal injuries during the crash. He was pronounced deceased on scene by the Washington Parish Coroner’s office. As a part of the investigation, a blood sample was collected for scientific analysis from Helton. Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists to make good, safe decisions such as never driving while impaired, always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained, obeying the speed limit, and avoiding all distractions. While not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that chances of surviving a crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Contact Information: | |||
