Troop L - NEWS RELEASE February 1, 2014 Single Vehicle Crash Kills Pedestrian in Washington Parish At approximately 1:40 am Louisiana State Police Troop L began investigating a one vehicle fatality crash involving a pedestrian on La. 438 near Warnerton in Washington Parish. The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2011 Buick Lucerne operated by Brody R. Reed (W/M 22) of Franklinton was traveling westbound on La. 438. Two pedestrians, Melanie Rivero (W/F 49) and Alexis Bergeron (W/F 31) both of Tylertown, MS were walking with traffic in the westbound lane. While traveling westbound in the lane the front right of the Buick struck both pedestrians. Rivero was pronounced dead by the Washington Parish Coroner's Office and Bergeron sustained minor injuries, but refused medical care. Reed was restrained at the time of the crash and not injured. Speed and Impairment are not factors on Reed’s part. Impairment is suspected on Rivero's part and a blood sample was collected for a toxicological analysis. Those results are pending as this crash remains under investigation. While the results in this crash are still pending, Troopers remind pedestrians and drivers that impairment continues to be a leading factor in fatal crashes across the state. A person’s ability to make good decisions is diminished as alcohol is absorbed in the body. Troopers will continue education programs and enforcement campaigns to reduce impairment on our roads. Troopers also urge both motorists and pedestrians to remain vigilant while on area roadways and pay close attention to their surroundings. Louisiana State Law requires pedestrians to utilize sidewalks where accessible or walk along the left shoulder as far away from the roadway as possible. Pedestrians should walk against the flow of traffic, wear light colored clothing, and stay out of travel lanes at all times. Contact Information: | |||
