Troop L - NEWS RELEASE February 6, 2014 Alcohol Suspected in Two Vehicle Fatality Crash in St. Helena Parish Yesterday at approximately 2:00 pm Louisiana State Police Troop L responded to a two vehicle fatality crash involving an 18-wheeler on La. 10 near Darlington in St. Helena Parish. The crash resulted in the death of the suspected impaired driver, Thomas Harrison (B/M age 47) of Paulding, MS. Preliminary investigation revealed that the crash occurred as Harrison was traveling eastbound on La. 10 in a 2002 Ford pick-up while a 2007 Freightliner 18 wheeler, driven by Calvin Green (B/M 43) of Natchez, MS, was westbound on La. 10. Harrison, for reasons under investigation, crossed the center line and entered the westbound lane striking the front left steering axle of the Freightliner. The impact caused the Ford to rotate coming to rest in the westbound lane of La. 10. The impact caused the Freightliner to slightly rotate coming to rest partially crossing both lanes of La. 10. Harrison was pronounced dead on the scene by the St. Helena Parish Coroner's Office and Green was not injured. Green was restrained at the time of the crash and alcohol use is not suspected. Harrison was properly restrained at the time of the crash and impairment is suspected on his part. Toxicology results are pending and the crash remains under investigation. Driver impairment continues to be a leading factor in fatal crashes across the state. A person’s ability to make good decisions is diminished as alcohol is absorbed in the body. This can begin after consuming just one drink. Troopers continue to urge motorists to remain vigilant while on area roadways, pay close attention to their surroundings, never drive impaired, and always have a plan. This plan should include always choosing a designated driver when consuming alcohol or taking medications that could potentially cause impairment while driving. Contact Information:
