Motorcyclist Killed in St. Tammany Parish Fatal Crash

Yesterday evening at approximately 5:00 P.M, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L began investigating a single vehicle fatal crash involving a motorcycle that occurred on I-12 westbound near La. 1088 in St. Tammany Parish. The crash took the life of 21 year old Tyler B. Bernos of Mandeville.

Preliminary investigation revealed that a 2013 Suzuki Motorcycle operated by Bernos, (B/M) was westbound on I-12. Bernos veered left, exited the roadway, and traveled almost 180 feet in the grassy median. Bernos was ejected from the Suzuki and struck the cable barrier. The Suzuki continued and broke into half. Debris from the Suzuki came to rest in the eastbound lanes of I-12. Bernos sustained severe injuries and was transported to the Interim LSU Hospital LEVEL 1 Trauma Center in New Orleans, where he was pronounced dead.

Speed is considered to be a factor in this crash. At this time it is unknown if alcohol is a factor; however, a blood sample was collected and results are pending. Bernos was not properly licensed to operate a motorcycle.

Bernos was wearing a helmet; however it was not fastened properly and came off during the crash. Motorcyclists must properly wear a US D.O.T. approved helmet when operating their motorcycle on Louisiana roadways. Although not all crashes are survivable, properly utilizing safety equipment like approved motorcycle helmets and seatbelts decrease your risk of serious injury or death tremendously. Troopers urge motorcyclists of all ages and experience levels to take extra precautions while riding and ensure that they are properly prepared and trained for a variety of riding conditions. Through participation in certified training programs, riders are educated on safe riding practices such as being visible, dressing for safety, applying effective riding strategies, and knowing the capabilities and limitations of their bike. Motorcyclists are taught how to apply these safety practices to not only avoid being involved in a crash but to greatly reduce the chance of injury should a crash occur.
