Unrestrained Driver Killed in Crash on I-55

This morning, shortly before 3:00 AM, Troopers responded to a single vehicle crash that occurred on I-55 northbound near milepost 29 in Tangipahoa Parish. Preliminary investigation revealed that a 1997 Buick, operated by Mucio Vicencio Ruiz (O/M, age 49) of Hammond, was traveling north on I-55 and for unknown reasons drifted off the right side of the road onto a grassy embankment. Upon leaving the roadway, the Buick traveled approximately 200 feet striking a guardrail and a wooden post support. The Buick continued crossing over a concrete retaining wall and came to rest in the northbound lane of I-55.
Ruiz, the sole occupant, was unrestrained at the time of the crash and was pronounced dead on the scene. At this time it is unknown if impairment is a factor. Toxicology results are pending an autopsy.

Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists of the importance of seatbelt use. Louisiana law requires that every person in a motor vehicle , regardless of seating position, is properly buckled up, each and every ride. Statistics show that the chances of surviving a violent crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Taking the time to buckle up before every trip is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash.
