TROOP L NEWS RELEASE August 28, 2013 Impairment Suspected in Single Vehicle Fatal Crash Greensburg, LA - Yesterday evening shortly before 7:00 pm, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L investigated a single vehicle fatal crash that took the life of the unrestrained driver, 22 year old Thomas Rowland of Holden, LA. The crash occurred on LA Hwy 37 near its intersection with LA 449 in St. Helena Parish. Troopers’ investigation revealed that the crash occurred as Rowland was traveling north on LA 37 in a 1995 Chevrolet Blazer. As the pickup continued northbound, Rowland failed to negotiate a left curve in the roadway causing the vehicle’s right side tires to run off road. Rowland overcorrected to the left causing the vehicle to rotate counterclockwise as it crossed both lanes of LA 37 and ran off road to the left side of the highway. Upon leaving the paved roadway, the Chevrolet SUV impacted a culvert and overturned coming to rest on its roof. Rowland was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle during the course of the crash. He sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Helena Parish Coroner’s Office. Alcohol use is suspected with a toxicology analysis to be performed at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. Whether impaired through alcohol, drugs, or a combination of the two, the consequences of driving while impaired remain the same. Making poor decisions in a vehicle leads to serious injuries and deaths every day across the state. Making the responsible decision can mean the difference between life and death.
