TROOP L NEWS RELEASE
November 22, 2013

Single Vehicle Car Crash Kills Unrestrained Driver in Washington Parish.

Shortly before 1:00 P.M. this afternoon, Troopers responded to a single vehicle fatal crash that occurred on La. 436 eastbound near milepost 5 (Acys Church) in Washington Parish. The initial investigation revealed that a 2002 Infinity, operated by Jackie Cotton (W/F 50) of Franklinton, was traveling eastbound on La. 436. Cotton failed to negotiate a curve in the road and lost control. The Infinity traveled into the westbound lane and Cotton over-corrected causing it to rotate clockwise and travel off of the road. Upon leaving the road the Infinity struck a tree, overturned, and ejected Cotton as it came to rest on its passenger side.

Cotton, who was the sole occupant, was not restrained at the time of the crash and was pronounced dead at Riverside Medical Center. Alcohol is not considered to be a factor; however, a blood sample was collected from Cotton so a toxicological analysis can be performed.

Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists of the importance of seatbelt use. Louisiana law requires that every person in a motor vehicle (cars and trucks) regardless of seating position, always to remain buckled up (day and night). Statistics show that the chances of surviving a violent crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Taking the time to buckle up before every trip is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash.
