TROOP L NEWS RELEASE November 11, 2013 Fiery crash claims the life of a Mississippi man on Interstate 59 Yesterday shortly after 9:00 P.M., a Carriere, MS man died as a result of a fiery motor vehicle crash on Interstate 59 in St. Tammany Parish. The crash occurred as Gerardo Arreola (W/M age 57) of Channelview, TX was operating a 1997 Peterbilt tractor/trailer north on I-59. As the Peterbilt continued northbound, it rolled over a mattress in the right lane. The mattress struck the undercarriage of the truck and tore the airlines, fuel lines, and electrical lines from under the vehicle. This caused the trailer to become stalled in the right lane of I-59 with the lights disabled. As the Peterbilt remained stalled in the right northbound lane, Thomas Neumann (W/M age 47) approached the stalled truck while traveling north in a 2006 Ford F-150. The Ford struck the rear of the Peterbilt's trailer. The Ford became engulfed in flames with Neumann still inside. Neumann sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene by the St. Tammany Parish Coroner's Office. Neumann was restrained and impairment is not suspected. Arreola was not in the vehicle at the time of the crash. He submitted to a voluntary breath test, which revealed his BAC was .000g%. State Police urge motorists to report any debris or objects on the roadway. State police also suggest motorists carry an emergency kit equipped with flares, in the event that they become stalled on the roadway at night. If your vehicle becomes stalled on the roadway immediately call *LSP (*577) or 911, position flares to warn on-coming motorists, get all the occupants to exit, and get to a safe location away from the vehicle.
